Courageous Advocacy

Courageous advocacy at Witchampton Church of England First School is about children looking beyond themselves, recognising injustice or need in the world, and taking meaningful action to champion change—living out the vision to "live a life of love" (Ephesians 5:2).

Here are some examples of how children at we demonstrate courageous advocacy:

1. Environmental Stewardship & Local Care (Global to Local)

  • Wimborne Food Bank & Harvest Appeals: During Harvest Festival at St. Mary’s Church, children don't just bring in food; they learn why families in Dorset face food poverty. The School Council organises collections and advocates for local families by donating directly to the Wimborne Food Bank.

  • Village & School Eco-Warriors: Inspired by their Outdoor Explorers sessions and the call to care for creation (Genesis 2:15), pupils take ownership of litter picks across the school grounds and Witchampton village, petitioning the school community to reduce single-use plastics in packed lunches.

2. Community Kindness & Intergenerational Connection

  • Supporting St. Mary's Monthly Soup Lunch: Pupils show advocacy for the elderly and isolated in their local community by visiting the village hall during church and community events, ensuring everyone feels remembered, valued, and included,

  • Red Nose Day / Children in Need / Christmas Jumper Days: Rather than just wearing non-school uniform, children present assemblies to their peers explaining the causes they are supporting, raising awareness about poverty, child mental health, and disability rights.

3. Global Solidarity & Justice (Charity Campaigns)

  • Local Hospice Support: Children actively participate in organising fundraisers for health charities, using their unique gifts to support families facing illness.

4. Pupil-Led Advocacy

  • Championing Inclusion: Playground Buddies actively stand up against exclusion and relational conflict, using their Courage value to ensure every child has the right to be themselves.

"At Witchampton C of E First School, our children learn that they are never too young to make a difference. Guided by our value of Courage, our pupils act as courageous advocates—speaking up for justice, caring for God's creation, and serving our local and global neighbours."
